United States: American health departments have issued doctors in the United States this week on signs of dengue fever, a virus spread by mosquitoes that is rising in many parts of the world.
For instance, a report from the United States shows that the number of cases recorded currently is three times more than what it was last year.
More about the news
Most people in the US suffer from diseases that are obtained from areas in the world wherein there is a report of dengue outbreak for those who have traveled the current year.
Only Florida has documented cases of evidence of local transmission, said the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, which are US territories, are also experiencing local transmission of the disease, the Hill reported.
Rise of cases in the US
CDC tracking proves that Florida has 191 cases, New York has 134 cases, and Massachusetts has 50 cases. The official figures of cases have gone beyond 2,241 across the country.
In a health advisory that the CDC issued on Tuesday, it encouraged medical practitioners to observe for symptoms of dengue fever, ask the patient about their travel history, and ask physicians to use the correct tests if the disease is suspected.
The virus can be substantive in tropical warm countries because warm-weather mosquitoes that cause the disease are prevalent there. But these mosquitoes, the researchers said, are expanding their geographical range owing to climate change, Hill noted.
Global Rise of Dengue
More than 6.6 million infections were recorded worldwide the previous year. Thus, in the first four months of this year, 7.9 million cases and 4,000 deaths related to the H1N1 flu. It has been quite acute in the Americas, particularly in countries such as Brazil and Peru.
The CDC also states that only about 25 percent of dengue fevers are accompanied by symptoms. If ever manifested, symptoms usually appear on the fifth to seventh day of the infection, as the Hill reported.
Usually, people develop temperature and other flu-like complaints like nausea, vomiting, aching body, rashes, joint and bone pains, and headaches.
In severe cases, manifestation can lead to severe bleeding, shock, and death. To date, there is no routine medicine that can cure dengue virus infection.
