Legionnaires’ disease results from the bacteria known as Legionella, and it grows best in warm water, such as in mist conditioning, cooling towers, hot tubs, and fountains.

As per the expert’s reports, it is characteristically contracted by inhalation and is non-infectious from person to person.

Legionnaires disease has also rampantly emerged in various outbreaks across the country, according to the CDC reports within the one-year period, ocregister.com reported.

Reporting of cases across the US state

Orange County reports that 82 of these cases have been reported so far this year.

The disease control and epidemiology team of the health agency, along with the county’s environmental health services department, are trying to identify the potential sources of a spate of infections.

It has some of the characteristics of pneumonia; the disease affects the lungs and is characterized by fever, headaches, cough, and shortness of breath. It can be treated through antibiotics.

The likelihood of an individual who resides or plans to venture into Westminster is very minimal, the agency said but noted that citizens with symptoms of pneumonia should see a doctor, ocregister.com reported.

Anyone over the age of 50 or has a compromised weakened immune system, a smoker, or has chronic respiratory disease is at high risk of getting more severe illness from Legionnaires’ disease.

Companies and building owners, particularly those with cooling towers, hot tubs, and fountains, are urged to assess their water management program, including disinfection to control bacterial growth and Legionella testing.
